Frequently Asked Questions

What is a neuropsychological evaluation?

Neuropsychological evaluations are specialized assessments that examine how a person's brain functions. It helps identify strengths, challenges, and patterns related to learning, attention, memory, executive functioning, emotional regulation and overall development. These comprehensive assessments provide recommendations for tailored support and interventions.

Children, teens, and young adults may benefit if there are concerns related to learning differences, attention or executive functioning, emotional or behavioral regulations, developmental delays, giftedness, or changes following medical or neurological events. Evaluations are also helpful when clarification or guidance is needed for school planning or treatment decisions.

Who can benefit from a neuropsychological evaluation?

What does the evaluation process look like?

The evaluation process typically includes several steps:

  • An initial intake with the parents - this is a virtual appointment.

  • Two to three testing sessions.

  • Rating scales and questionnaires completed by the parents, teachers and sometimes by the individual.

  • A comprehensive analysis of the results

  • A feedback session to understand findings, recommendations and to answer any questions.

  • A finalized report with all details, results and recommendations

The full process generally spans 3-6 weeks from intake to final report, depending on scheduling and the complexity of the evaluation. Testing sessions usually range from 2-3 hours, which will be completed in multiple sessions to reduce fatigue.

How long does the evaluation take?

What should we bring to an evaluation?

It is helpful to bring any previous assessment reports, academic records, and relevant medical information to the evaluation. This assists in forming a comprehensive understanding of the child's developmental and cognitive profile.

Testing is conducted in a supportive, structured, and engaging environment. Breaks are provided as needed, and assessments are adjusted for age, stamina, and comfort. Children and teens often describe the experience as challenging but manageable, and many enjoy parts of the testing.

What should we expect on the day of testing?

Do parents stay during testing?

Parents will be present for the intake which is done virtually. On test day the parent is required to wait in the waiting area for children aged 5-10 years old while it is highly recommended for children older than 10.

Recommendations are individualized and may include:

  • School accommodations or academic support

  • Behavioral or emotional strategies

  • Therapy or intervention referrals

  • Parenting or classroom strategies

  • Guidance for supporting strengths and areas of growth

The goal is to provide actionable, meaningful guidance that can be implemented right away.

What types of recommendations are provided?

What is the overall goal of a neuropsychological evaluation?

The end goal is understanding - helping families, educators and individuals clearly understand how the brain works for the child or young adult. Evaluations are designed to empower informed decisions, support development, reduce uncertainty and create a clear path forward.
